Occasionally, when Bordeaux produces its best vintage, the entry level, modestly priced AOC chateau wines from surrounding districts are well worth buying. Bergerac is about 100km from Bordeaux in SW France and this little gem represents the most economical Bordeaux-style accompaniment to red meat you could imagine. The bouquet if lifted; a hint of tobacco leaf. The palate shows currents and liquorice characters, good concentration and finishes dry. Your reduced price for this just $13.40/btl.

This Clare Valley producer has come up with this excellent value for money quaffer which is a blend of 53% Shiraz, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Malbec. Good rich mouth feel but slightly lighter and not overt or sweet like many Aussie reds around this price. Easy drinking and suits lighter meat dishes and rich pasta sauces. Well worth a try and your price is only $14.30

No question that Te Mata is one of NZ's best producers across the board. This wine is of excellent quality and and we think one of the best value red wine buys. Syrah blended with the white wine Viognier (2%) which is the classic Northern Rhone blend adds up to increased bouquet and complexity. This wine is classy, exhibiting characters of cherry and aniseed, lovely mouthfeel with a soft, lingering finish. RRP is $28.00. Our price to you till the end of June will be just $22.90/btl or $21.90 on case buys - absolute bargain. |

Plantagenet in Western Australia produce a big range of quality wines and their Omrah label is particularly good for the price. On the nose there are hints of red berry fruits and vanilla. The palate reveals fleshy, ripe fruit characters with a hint of spice. Very easy to drink with quite soft tannins. Highly recommended at your price of only $15.90/btl.

Organic producer from just south of Florence in Tuscany that produces this Sangiovese (80%) Chianti and a reserve of this or 'Chianti Classico'. This is one of our favourites because it exudes wonderful characters of black cherry, herbs, spice and chocolate. It has great depth of flavour and is a steal at your price of just $19.70/btl . If you haven't tried this or even want to step up a notch then the Chianti Classico Tenuta la Gabbiola 2000 is a class act and a bargain at only $25.90 .

Muddy Water is a top producer from Waipara (all their wines are very classy) and we believe one of the best value wines they have released is the 2003 Pinotage. There wasn't much produced and we don't have much left so you will need to be quick. Pinotage is highly underrated as a NZ varietal yet the few NZ ones we have tried have lots of merit. Closely related to Pinot Noir, the Pinotage from MW shows fantastic uplifting berry fruit characters on the nose and palate, enhanced by a textural mouthfeel, lovely balance and a focused, lingering finish. How can a wine this good be available to you at only $26.90/btl . - not incl in our mixed dozens because of low availability. |
