Frazzled nerves from living through more than 400 aftershocks have dominated most people's lives in Christchurch since that major
shake arrived in the early hours of September 4th. We are hopefully all slowly returning to some semblance of normality although it
will take a long time for some to recover depending on the degree of damage and stress they have suffered. We are hopeful your
damage was minimal. Here at the shop we were very lucky, losing only about 10 dozen bottles and five dozen Spiegelau glasses.
There was plenty of wine on the shop carpet that produced a complex bouquet that could be detected some distance before arriving
at the door, but there were no upturned fridges, wineracks or stands - and the most amazing stock survival story of all was our glass
display (shown in the pic below) which is a table of 37 Spiegelau glasses perched on their boxes. Not one glass fell off and broke!

Business has been very slow since the earthquake but we're hoping to see you in the shop to take advantage of some of our great offers. Traffic around town is slow in places but not if you come to Hemingway Fine Wines on the one-way on Durham Street North (turn into Chester Street West for ample 30min and metered parking). Come and buy your wine from us for a far better deal - Prior to the quake we surveyed a supermarket on Moorehouse Ave that claims low wine prices and found that of 15 wines they stock that we stock we beat them on price on 14 - some by as much as 40%. Of the multitude of other wines that supermarket stocked we would rate most of them undrinkable. I'm not holding back here, supermarkets are ripping everyone off by advertising a few "loss leaders" to get people into believing everything is cheap. Well, it's not! There are just two supermarket chains and they are price-fixing - in the past 10 years the CPI Index has risen 33% but their combined food prices have risen 43%. You call that stealing by stealth!

Lively and zingy drinking while it is young and vibrant, but can be cellared for those who appreciate the more complex characters that bottle maturation develops. This Waipara savvy is distinctive and it will accompany a wide range of dishes, especially seafood and white meats. The character of this wine is a blend of Waipara flintiness and clean fruit and it finishes clean and dry on the palate. Stunning value!

Torlesse Waipara Riesling 2008
Well balanced Riesling with both citrus and fruit characters that can be enjoyed young or will reward some cellaring by developing some rounder, honeyed notes over the next five years. The hint of residual sugar is very well-balanced against the acidity and this goes brilliantly with softer style cheeses.
RRP is $15.90/btl. Our special price is only $13.90/btl or $13.25/btl on case buys

Torlesse Waipara Chardonnay 2008
Waipara doesn't boast a particularly high reputation for chardonnay but it's the region's quiet achiever. The style of this lovely Chardonnay is fruit driven, nicely balanced with minimal oak influence with mineral notes and clean on the finish. About 25% percent was barrel fermented to add complexity from time on lees with a hint of spicy oak being evident. Clean on the palate and very satisfying, especially at the price.
RRP $19/btl, our special price only $14.90/btl or $13.90/btl on cases buys

In style this is very like Bollinger and also it doesn't undergo malolactic so it's a very good keeper in the bottle. Duval-Leroy Fleur de Champagne Brut NV
Duval-Leroy is another great name in Champagne that makes stunning bubbly out of its modern winery in Vertuis in the south. The House is one of the largest landowners in Champagne and this is a family owned operation run by Carol Duval-Leroy; the winemaker is also female as are most of the employees - and guess what - the house style brut NV shown at right is very feminine in style with lots of elegance, a fine mousse and delicate finish. Quite the opposite in style from the Gosset above but no less attractive in its own right. Duval-Leroy (pronounced Duval-le wha) is rated in the top 15 houses in Champagne.
RRP $81/btl, our special price only $59.90/btl - fantastic buying
