This Christmas the Christchurch retailers within the four avenues need everyones support. Even before the earthquake there has been a gradual exodus of workers in the CBD - 3,500 have left in the past couple of years according to those people in the know. Recession, an earthquake and a lack of foresight and planning at the Council to keep the inner City vibrant have all contributed to the current plight of the inner Christchurch. Road blockages and traffic snarls since the earthquake has exacerbated the problem caused over a couple of decades by the emergence and dominance of suburban malls - WHY has this been allowed to happen? Isn't it logic that if you develop suburban malls the people to fill them have to be attracted from somewhere? When I think of town planning the only word that comes to mind is 'mediocrity.' Meanwhile, back in the wine-jungle, the free Friday Event Tasting this week features the Bellbird Spring wines which can be tasted in-shop with cheeses between 2pm and 6pm. Framingham Pinot Noir 2009

Made by Andrew Hedley who we rate as one of NZ's best winemakers, this is one of the really excellent pinot noirs that are available for less than $30. The bouquet is generous with red cherry, cranberry and summer fruit compote notes. Some attractive savoury, “smoky bacon” complexity with hints of spice. Palate is concentrated and fleshy with fine, silky tannins that are immediately approachable. Rich, savoury meat and game flavours over red cherry, raspberry and cranberry fruit, contrasting nicely with supporting charry oak. Hints of smoke, mushroom and mineral provide some complexity. Fine acid balance promotes a long juicy, finish. Fabulous drinking.

Cave de Tain Syrah 2007

This is from the excellent 2007 vintage and for the price it's very, very good. Brilliant, deep ruby colour. Fresh nose of red fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant) with notes of spices (pepper, cinnamon), and a hint of liquorice. On the palate, very easy, uncomplicated drinking with supple and smooth tannins. Perfect for the barbeque meats.
