Gibson Bay Pinot Noir 2006

Always on the look-out for a bargain NZ pinot noir which tend to be few and far between but, this is certainly one . This unheard of label when tasted shocked us with the character and quality of the contents; we blind tasted a number of pinotphiles who rated it between $30 and $45 RRP - our thoughts exactly. It comes off a limestone/clay 1ha site in Kaikoura and only 4000 bottles were made. Despite the label this is unbeatable value-for-money pinot.

Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir 2006

If this wine is a sign of what's to come from Pyramid Valley Vineyards home wines then Mike & Claudia Weersing are the two most important people in NZ wine (in my humble view). This wine and their other home release pinot noir, Angel Flower, are groundbreaking wines against anything that has previously been labelled as NZ P/N. Brought out as the last flight (a surprise at our tasting last Thursday week and the quality of the 6-flight, 12 wines tasting was outstanding), I, and others were blown away by the burgundian style quality - There's nothing more to say except to acquire this wine you should either visit our shop or phone me - Brian

Les Volcans Viognier 2006

Wines are very much like people, they exude different personalities and character with some being dull others volatile, some nasty others charming. This one is feminine, elegant, complex, charming, linear, nicely structured and fragrantly perfumed with scents of apricot/white peach and an alluring finish - perhaps it's the equiv of Angelina Jolie or Audrey Hepburn in another era. I think I'm trying to say this is a bit of a stunner, especially for the price. Good Viognier (Vee-on-yay) for under $20 is quite rare and the wine goes with a multitude of dishes incl seafoods.

Cook Grenache 2007

Scotsman Andy Cook who worked here in this shop awhile ago is now making wine in Collioure in the South of France and it happens to be very good. A Vin de Pays des Cotes Catalanes - this is a region where Grenache does very well and this low-cropped version has really lovely fruit concentration and structure; sauvoury bouquet and on the palate hints of blackberry, cherries and plum give this wine lots of character - also its brilliant value-for-money. Comes in Chardonnay, too.

Monte del Fra Custoza 2006

Citrus and summer stonefruit characters like peaches and nectarine dominate this exceedly good Italian white made from the Garganega grape.  The flavours are quite delicate and the palate is medium weight with good mouthfeel and while finishing dry there is a definite element of creaminess on the finish. Yet another very good European wine for under $20 and perfect for a chicken or seafood wine matching.
