Domaine Servin Chablis 2009

Chablis is arguably the greatest region for the Chardonnay grape in the world. This  is a wonderful Christmas Day wine for all the white meats - turkey, chicken, goose, etc. The flinty/mineral style of this wine makes it the perfect match. Also available from Domaine Servin is the Premier Cru Vaillons 2009 and the Grand Cru Bougros 2002 - a great vintage.

John Forrest Collection Chardonnay 2006

One of the best chardonnays made and available in NZ. This wine is quite rich but what it has more than anything is beautiful balance and integration. Chardonnay in NZ is quite hard to get right and often it lacks balance with too much of one component (oak) and not enough of others (e.g. clean on the palate). This wine has layers of flavours and total integration with good weight - it's a big wine "without the lumps." Stunning.

Raffelli Chianti 2008 DOCG

Chianti is a far cry from the table wine in a basket it once was! Here's a classic example. This has superb fruit character, exhibiting clove, cinnamon spice and savouriness with typical Sangiovese layered characters with a clean, dry finish. Perfect for red meat pasta dishes

Sandihurst Gewurztraminer 2008

Sandihurst is making some outstanding wines in the Canterbury region and this Gewurztraminer is another example. The 2008 is blended with some Central Otago fruit and the result is very smart, well-made wine that's perfect for a 5pm aperitif if you're not having fizz. Characters of lychees with a hint of ginger and sweetness with lovely texture make this an appealing wine when matched with a slightly sweet cheese or Asian style cuisine, or pretty damn good on its own as well.

Chateau La Blanchetterie 2009

Grand Vin de Bordeaux can be anything from ordinary to average to very good -  the La Blanchetterie 2009 is in the latter category. The wine displays really good fruit concentration and character - Ruby in colour with delicate nose of cassis, blueberry and some smokey notes.  The mouthfeel has finesse with soft tannins but clean on the palate.  Very good at the price. Go well with the Christmas lamb.

Conde Valdemar Rioja Rosado 2007

 

This wine shows lovely fresh aromas of raspberry and cherry with perhaps a hint of apricot. On the palate the fruit all comes through in the dry, textured style and the finish is clean and crisp. A fantastic wine in these warm summer days. Perfect with white meats like pork at Christmas lunch.

Weinbach Pinot Blanc Reserve 2009

Weinbach is one of the 3 top producers in Alsace. Their pinot blanc reserve is stunning - a special wine suited to a special dish on Christmas Day. From the marly limestone soil at the foot of the Altenbourg, the wine is soft, delicate and  robust. It combines freshness and suppleness. An excellent aperitif or it matches very well with fish or white meats. The wine is intense and highly complex and is biodynamically produced.
