Some of the best Spanish wines we have ever tried will be the subject of our tasting on 20 May at Eliza's Manor on Bealey. These wines will be a revelation as they are all new to NZ and of a very high quality. The night before of the 19th (Wednesday), we will co-host a Degustation dinner at Restaurant Schwass which will feature eight wines (different from the tasting) matched to canapes and five courses - and we all know how delicious the Jonny Schwass prepared dishes are! This will be a really great night.
We have an excellent line-up of wines listed below so come in for a browse, a chat and a taste of something we are sure to have open. See you then - The Mad Hatter

The language of wine:
Customer Peter came in, tasted the wine and said; "this is a really interesting wine with a long aftertaste that was pleasant, but not much up front." I thought about that statement for a moment and then thought I would interpret that as, " the wine has character, is smooth and has good length but it's not the fruity wine I'm used to." What Peter was drinking was a glass of Ferraton Cotes-du-Rhone 2007 which is what I would describe as 'linear' or perhaps 'balanced' which means that its a wine that isn't a fruit bomb which provides this burst of ripe fruit flavours up-front or immediatley it hits your taste buds but then falls away quickly, disapates and is gone in a flash. Quite a lot of 'new-world' wine can be attributed to the latter description - this is wine that's a reflection of the grape whereas, old-world wine is a reflection of the 'terroir' which often means it has more earthy characters rather than fruity. It probably also means it is more even in the short time it passes your lips, is tasted and ultimately swallowed. Wines with structure stay even through this drinking process (or linear) - they have no lumps, if you like. Structure in wine is merely the acid or a combination of acid and tannin which is the skeleton or backbone of the wine's make-up. At least, that's the way I interpret it. Other tasters of the Cotes-du-Rhone have described it as 'watery' or 'thin' which is just another way of saying the wine didn't possess the forward fruit-burst that I'm used to with new-world wine. The subjectvity of wine is what makes it all so interesting.

The 2010 vintage looking good for the top wineries
It was the coldest spring weather in 64 years and December and January could have been warmer but the late summer/autumn sunshine has brought grapes on to the extent the vintage is late but looking okay. Grape growers have been hit badly with falling prices and there are lots of vineyards 'for sale' everywhere, especially in Marlborough. But those growers and winemakers that have a strong emphasis towards producing high quality grapes and making high quality wine will shine through. The healthy, clean looking Pinot Noir grapes shown here are on the Pyramid Valley Angel Flower vines.

Spiegelau Glasses at Sale Prices - up to 40% off rrp
We still have some great deals on glasses if you didn't take advantage of our recent specials. The trick to getting the best out of all classy wine is to drink it out of a quality glass. Nothing will improve a wine as well as a purpose designed glass; after years of testing glasses at Riedel Masterclasses and doing lots of private testing, we can say a good wine glass is worth more than its weight in the process of wine enjoyment. There's lots of truth in the old saying that "you can't enjoy grand cru when taken from a jam jar."

25% off Cloudy Bay Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer
These wines are bargains at the prices. Both the Cloudy Bay Pinot Gris 2008 and the Gewurztraminer 2007 are 20% off for a short time only with limited stocks. They are both very well-made wines which are released in limited quanities. The Pinot Gris is lovely; rich on the palate but finishes dry. The Gewurzt shows exotic fruit characters and is unctous on the palate.
Both wines are in keeping with the tradition of quality at Cloudy Bay. When you come in ask for the discount as this offer only applies to Hemingway Email customers - it's on the shelf at full price. Your price is just $25.90

Insoglio del Cinghale Campo di Sasso 2007
Insoglio is one of the 'super-tuscans' that hails from Bibbona on the Etruscan Coast of Italy, very close to the famed Ornellaia and Sassicaia vineyards. Made from almost equal parcels of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, this wine also has a touch of Petite Verdot (5%). This is a very stylish intense wine with a lifted bouquet of fruit, spice and liquorice. On the palate it shows balance and harmony with a dominance of fruit characters; blackcurrant, tobacco, mint, oak and a firm tannic grip on finish. Treat yourself.
RRP $53.90/btl. Your price is just $48.50/btl

La Bomba 2007
Very easy drinking, not overly complicated but great value-for-money at this price. Spanish wine that's a true quaffer but goes down like a treat - lots of ripe fruit in this gives it an explosive bouquet of berries and floral and the palate is full and lush and satisfying. Brilliant value.
RRP is $14.50/btl. Our special price is only $12.50/btl.

Miopasso Nero d'Avola 2007 - Sicily
Nero d'Avola is an interesting Scillian grape variety that offers red wines of good palate weight and good ageability. The variety is deeply coloured and the character is plum and chocolate with good tannin and acid structure. It needs lots of sun and warmth to ripen and is therefore suited to Sicily where it's also successfuly blended. This is an excellent example that encompasses all those qualities and is a bargain price.
RRP $18.90, our special price only $16.90/btl

Fonseca Vintage Port 1994 - 100/100 WS and RP
This was wine of the year - yes, No1 equal with Taylor's 1994 Vintage Port in the highly respected 'Wine Spectator Magazine' in their top 100 wines of the year with both ports being awarded 100/100 and the same maximum score also coming from wine guru Robert Parker. Along with the 1963 vintage, one of the great ports of the 20th Century
RRP $350/btl. Our special price offer $299/btl

Camshorn Pinot Noir 2007 - 25% off
We have been fans of the Camshorn wines since day one and our recent bus trip to Camshorn and Pyramid Valley did nothing to lessen our enthusiasm. The Pinot noir 2007 comes off their Demett Clays' soils and and it's not only from a very good vintage but it scored extremely well in our blind pinot noir tasting late last year. This wine is more burgundian in style with less forward fruitiness but good balance and structure with a hint of alluring forest floor, mushroomy corruption.
RRP is $39.90btl ea, our low price only $29.90

Free Fonseca wooden cheeseboard with each two bottles of Bin 27
Only $41.50/btl
|
 |
Fonseca Bin No. 27 was created over a century ago for family consumption, and only released commercially in 1972. It is produced primarily from wines from Fonseca's own quintas in the Cima Corgo and thus shows an exceptional quality and consistency from year to year. Blended from reserve wines selected for their intense fruit character and depth of color, Fonseca Bin No. 27 spends four years in large wood vats prior to bottling. Although it may improve slightly with bottle age, Bin No. 27 is ready to consume when bottled. It does not require decanting, as a cold precipitation prior to bottling prevents any "crust" from forming. Its well-knit structure, rich, velvety full body and luscious blackcurrant and cherry flavors, also evident in the nose, carry into an intense, lingering finish. Bin No. 27 should be served at room temperature either alone or with simple, classic last courses and desserts. It is best consumed within two weeks after uncorking.
