Here's the line-up of 9 outstanding wines:
1. Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, 2008
According to Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Pale, bright yellow. High-toned aromas of mint and lime, with hints of honey and resin. Supple and bright, with attractive citrus fruit flavor complicated by a note of nutmeg. Not the last word in intensity or grip, but very easy to drink-and always a splendid value." (Mar/Apr 09) And from Wine Spectator: "Shows delightful floral, heather, candied lime peel and quince notes on a bright, unadorned frame.
Bouchard Findlayson Chardonnay, Walker Bay, 2008
2. Pax Verbatim Viognier, Stellenbosch 2008
Medium bodied, with luscious aromas of white peach and orange blossom, this wine is soft and gentle on the palate showing all the rich vibrancy of a typical viognier with a fresh and deliciously lingering aftertaste.
Raats Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, 2008
3. Leopard's Leap Pinotage/Shiraz, Franschehook, 2006
Soft and medium-bodied, this wine reflects the distinctive characteristics of both varietals in the blend. Plum and mullberry flavours are supported by vanilla undertones while the character us spicy and peppery, with a firm tannin structure. An ideal companion with oxtail, roast pork or hearty stews, as well as liver, quiche or cold meats. Also on its own a sheer delight.
4. Raats Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch, 2008
90/100 Wine Spectator Magazine
5. Kaapzicht Pinotage, Stellenbosch, 2007
Bright, pinky red colour. Sweet aromas of raspberry and banana fruit topped with soft nutmeg and clove spiciness. Flavours deep and satisfying with fruit aplenty and a hint of coffee: reminiscent of biting into a ripe berry with the sweet juice oozing, coating the mouth and following this with a cup of coffee latte. The wine's good balance makes it a winner
6. Klein Constantia, Cabernet Sauvignon, Constantia, 2007
Deep ruby in appearance, the nose is filled with ripe, briary fruit where black currants and plums jostle alongside fine woodspice and cocoa notes. The palate is richly layered with full bodied tannins and waves of dense berry fruit, persisting in a long flavourful finish.
7. Kaapzicht Pinotage, Stellenbosch, 2007
8. Meerlust Rubicon, Bordeaux blend, Stellenbosch, 2005
The wine has an intense, opaque deep ruby color, very slight gradation to the rim. Bright and vivacious in the glass, very youthful. The nose is brooding and restrained at this stage, yet beginning to emerge with deep, dark fruit, cassis, plum and black cherry. There is a pronounced minerality on the nose with graphite, cedar smoke and cigar box. The palate is beautifully structured, fuller bodied than some earlier vintages of Rubicon due to the intensity of the fruit and intricate tannin structure. The wine exhibits rich juiciness already, but the compactness and sinewy taughtness of this young wine suggest a long maturation potential. The perfectly formed, ripe tannins are densely packed and tightly woven but remain lithe and almost powdery, giving the wine a generous opulence even at this early stage. Woa!
9. Kaapzicht Hanepoot, Muscat of Alecandria, Stellenbosch, 2007
Sweet flavours of honey, spice, raisins, barleysugar and candied apricot carries through on a silky smooth palate. richly textured with balanced sweetness and spicy Muscat fruit seamlessly melded into a delicious mouthful.
