Time to try some bigger reds for winter and so below you will find a selection of affordable wines - 3 new ones and some old favourites - that are almost guaranteed to ward off the 'winter blues.' I find most Aussie wines difficult to get excited about (bar those great South Australian Rieslings) but here we have some really good value-for-money reds that we are giving a high recommendation - despite a name for a wine like Box Head - you will have to read the back label to discover how that came about. Don't forget that we have over 900 different wine labels on offer and when you come in to the shop we will warm you up with a taste of something and some friendly service. See you soon.

Fools Bay Beached Shiraz Cabernet 2006
Some of the best Aussie reds we have tried in ages is this one and the two wines under the Nevis Bluff below. They are from the Barossa Valley Hentschke family owned Hentley Farm and are made by an NZ winemaker from ChCh and are superbly made; the Beached Shiraz-Cabernet shown here is full bodied, deep garnet coloured with chocolate and ripe blackberry dominant on the palate. It's well balanced, unfiltered and fermented dry which many Aussie reds are not. Highly recommended - Shiraz 60% and Cabernet 40%. Go for it.
RRP is $21. Our special Price is only $18.50/btl. Case Price $214

Nevis Bluff Central Otago Pinot Noir 2004
Central Otago winemaker Dean Shaw is the creator of this very fine Pinot Noir from Nevis Bluff who are one of the few producers that bottle age their pinot prior to release. It makes a difference and this vintage displays excellent varietal character with forest floor, mushrooms and savoury, earthy characters coming through. Best of all it has wonderful texture, is elegant and long. And it's a great price even before our discount.
RRP is $38.50. Our special pricer offer is just $33.90/btl. Case Price $395

Fools Bay Dusty's Desire Shiraz 2006
Hentley Farm's 100% Shiraz has really good concentration and justifies their claim to be from very low-yielding vines. The wine is dark with chocolate, liquorice and blackberry flavours dominating with a hint of spice and is consistent with other wines in the range; unfiltered, good balance, dry and long. Shiraz drinkers will
love
this one!
RRP is $25.50. Our special price $22.50. Case Price $265

Box Head Shiraz Cabernet 2006
Just a little lighter bodied of the three Hentley Farm wines mentioned here but eminently quaffable and displays lots of character. This wine consists of 72% Shiraz and 28% Cabernet and is fruit driven with very little oak influence. On the palate there are hints of blackberry and strawberry with a little spice and relatively soft, approachable tannins. Goes down like a treat.
RRP is $18.90. Our special price is just $17.50. Case price $205

Canonico Salento Negroamaro 2003
One of the few Italian reds we have seen under screw cap, as well as cork, and we think the wine under screw cap is comparatively brighter and more consistent than the cork. This is an excellent wine for the low cost - it displays a little ageing quality and has lots of character, layers and length. Negroamaro is a very underrated variety and is grown only on the heel of Italy's boot. It's a thick skinned grape that gives good structure but this wine also has lots of charm. If you haven't tried then,
WHY NOT?
RRP is $15.50. Our brilliant price $13.90/btl

Jackson's Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2007
Resolute Sauvignon Blanc drinkers like their favourite variety all year round so as we enter the depths of winter, and savvy's hardly a winter wine, here's a good deal. Traditional styled Savvy that displays lots of aromatics, fresh fruit and crisp acidity with notes of capsicum, asparagus and gooseberry. Save nearly 30% when buy by the case.
RRP is $23.50. Our great price only $16.90/btl. Case price $199.
