As it turns out, Veuve Clicquot, one of the gold standards in the Champagne world, was developed by one amazing French woman in the mid-1800’s, Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin, who was widowed at twenty-seven years of age (”veuve” is “widow” in French).
Despite the fact that the Napoleonic Code defined a woman’s role as being at home, the Veuve Clicquot had the insight that widows “were the only women granted the social freedom to run their own affairs.” One-hundred and fifty years after her death, her empire still is at the top of its field. And what did Pushkin, Chekhov, Ian Fleming, Jules Verne, the Bourbons, Romanovs, Hapsburgs, Bonapartes and every British Monarch since Edward VII have in common? They all drank Veuve Cliquot!

At our tasting of Mumm Champagne and Deutz Methode Traditional last Thursday one taster made the comment: 'All the wines were excellent but they just kept getting better.' Lily Bollinger (1899-1977) was another great woman in the world of Champagne. She made possibly the most famous Champagne quote of all, after being asked how she enjoyed a glass of Bolly. She said:   "I drink when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it when I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - except when I'm thirsty, of course!"
