If you're serious about drinking better quality wine and trying something new then read right to the bottom of this page. There are some seriously good wines shown here at very good value prices - and what makes value in my dictionary is a wine that surprises you with an 'uplifting experience' that in retrospect makes the wine inexpensive. We all should be trying to avoid 'wine tedium' and drink better quality (even it it means drinking less). Aussie wine guru, the late Len Evans, used to say, "...your body is a temple and you shouldn't waste it on a bad bottle of wine - only drink the best."

Congratulations to Mr Ian Metcalf who won the draw for a 6-bottle case of Pelorus NV and the matching pewter ice bucket. Watch out for for our next prize-offer draw - the odds are excellent! |
Valli Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir 2008
This was the 'Star Wine' at last week's tasting with Grant Taylor of Valli Vineyard in Central Otago. Grant does 3 pinot noirs and they're all high quality releases - each with its own character reflective of the 3 terroirs from which the grapes have grown. The Waitaki 2008 (the other two are 2007s) is still tight as you would expect but like all good pinot it will evolve for you in the glass and the opened bottle is even better the next day. The wine is strawberry hue in colour but that belies the power of lovely fruit integration with a seamless structure that vividly reflects the heavy limestone soils from which the grapes are grown. This is a stunning wine that exudes power, balance and elegance. Well made, Grant!
RRP $54.90/btl. Our price to you only $48.90/btl. |

Cape Mentelle Margaret River Chardonnay 2007
The Margaret River has a habit of coming up with glorious chardonnays and this wine continues that trend. My description of this wine is 'that it delivers delicate white fruit nuances of peach and pear with a hint of nuttiness and a textured, slightly creamy, finish.' There are a 1000 different types and clones of chardonnay that produce just as many styles. Chardonnay is very personal and this style that's not over-oaked or over-maloed is my choice. And at the price I believe it offers a higher quality than the vast majority.
RRP is $41.50/btl. Our price to you is just $36.90/btl |
Gabriel Liogier Coteaux du Tricastin La Ferette 2006
This new wine from a northern corner of the southern Rhone Valley has been on our list a couple of times for this email but we keep selling out. It's basically a 'Cotes-du-Rhone' style with the ingredients being Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, Syrah and Mouvedre. The trouble is that it's so damn delicious that it keeps disappearing and no wonder, it's so damn inexpensive. Amazing concentration and balance and fantastic length and drinkability for a wine of this price. This wine is basically flawless.
RRP $21.90/btl, our special price is only $19.70 - great value |

Dancing Water Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2008
This is the third release of this single vineyard savvy from the Awatere Valley. The only time this label was enetered in competition it won the Trophy at the Sydney International Wine competition. The appearance is brilliant pale straw with a hint of green. The aroma is multi level with lemongrass, passion fruit, guava and citrus fruit aromas with underlying notes of flint, mineral and green capsicum. The palate is layered in an elegant integration of mineral, ripe citrus, tropical fruit flavours and is balanced with refreshing acidity. RRP is $24.50/btl. Our special price to you is just $20.90/btl

Chateau Parveil de Luze Margaux 2001
Quality wines from Margaux in Bordeaux are renown for their fragrant bouquet and ability to age. This one has some age and matched with a rack of lamb there isn't anything better. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, it shows a beautiful garnet color. Supple nose of black fruit and herbs. Ripe, juicy fruit across the palate with good underlying acidity. Some gentle spice and herb flavors. Velvety tannins and a long, smooth finish.
RRP $49.00/btl, our special price only $43.90/btl |

Jean-Claude Boisset Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2006
We've had several vintages of this wine and this 2006 release is the best by far. For a Bourgogne pinot noir for this price it offers amazing quality; the colour is light cherry and the nose has lifted aromas of cherries and strawberries. On the palate there is a lovely textured, rounded, red fruit character which carries right through the mid-palate to a long, soft, fine-tannined finish - the wine has balance and poise and it is generous to a fault, especially at this price.
RRP is $35.90/btl. Our special price to you is only $31.90/btl |
Domaine A et P. de Villaine Bourgogne La Fortune 2007
This is a very elegant Bourgogne from Cote Chalonnaise from the highly respected label of Aubert Villaine, co-manager of Domaine de la Romanee Conti. The wine has a lifted bouquet of floral, dried herbs, cherries and hints of liquorice and leans more to a feminine style. The wine has lovely balance - delicate on the palate with a seamless red fruit concentration that holds through the mid-palate and leads to a long, fine-tannin finish. This label is noted for it's value-for-money mid-price range burgundies. Highly recommended.
RRP is $49.90/btl. Our special price is just $44.50/btl |
